GI bleeding is a commonly encountered medical problem. The first step in the medical
management of GI bleeding is to determine the source of bleeding. Physicians
categorize GI bleeding as coming from the upper GI tract or the lower GI tract. This
distinction is of particular importance when considering occult bleeding since lower GI
bleeding may represent a colon cancer in a curable stage. Current stool tests for blood only alert the physician to the presence of blood. Typically, a patient will then undergo a colonoscopy to determine if there is a serious pathological condition. SoretScan™ was designed as a stool test that can accurately predict if the bleeding is occurring from an upper or lower GI site. This test should provide a much less expensive and readily available means for evaluation prior to colonoscopy. SoretScan™ was developed to have the following properties:
